The starting point to determine service lines is a professional analysis of the passenger and freight forecasts. The next step is to wisely determine each rail service line, passenger or freight, for which the service line can have a variety of characteristics:

What are the origin and destination stations of the service line?

Several alternatives can be defined for the train route, so the route has to be determined in accordance with the demand and the infrastructure limitations.

Is the service line characterized as intercity direct line or with intermediate stops?

Define the type of coaches/cars/locomotives for each service line; the amount of the rolling stock; the capacity of each train (passengers or freight tons).
